Turkey top medal table of Karate 1-Premier League in Istanbul
Turkey extended their domination in Karate 1-Premier League in Istanbul and extended the successful first day of competition with an outstanding demonstration in the last day of the tournament.
Local Karatekas wrapped up the seventh event of 2016 Karate 1-Premier League with an impressive tally of 25 medals, nine gold, five silver and 11 bronze medals. Saudi Arabia earned the second position in the medal table with five medals while Croatia finished in third place with two awards.
Turkey's Enes Erkan became the local hero in the last day of competition after his victory in Male Kumite 84+ kg. Following his bronze medal in the 2016 European Championships and the second position in his last appearance in Karate 1-Premier League in Istanbul in 2014, the World champion demonstrated his poise with a triumphant participation this weekend.
The 29 year-old Turkish idol beat Orkhan Heydarly of Azerbaijan in the final to put Turkey on the winning path on Sunday.
The domination of local Karatekas was also extended to the team competitions, as Turkey also reached the top of the podium in Male and Female Team Kata categories. Host ladies beat Macedonia in the final of Female Team Kata while local Karatekas took the three spots of the podium in Male Team Kata competition.
Turkey's Ugur Aktas in Male Kumite -84kg and Busra Seyda Turan in Female Kumite -68kg completed hosts' excellent performance with two more gold medals. Croatia's Masa Vidic in Female Kumite 68+kg was the only non-Turkish athlete to earn gold in the last day of the memorable event being celebrated in Istanbul.
Karate Stars will have yet another chance to showcase their abilities in the first-class international Karate competitions as Fortaleza (Brazil) hosts the eight event of the 2016 Karate 1-Premier League tournament in less than two weeks, from September 17-18.
